Late Saturday night, the Kansas City Chiefs made a move that everyone had been waiting for. They officially ended 31 team's dreams and hopes of signing the best defensive player in the NFL, as they locked Chris Jones up for another five years, with $95 million guaranteed.
Jones now has the highest annual salary of any defensive tackle in NFL history, even higher than Aaron Donald, of whom he has been better than the last two or three seasons. Let's also not forget that this guy is a three-time Super Bowl champion because, well, why not?
As we all know by now, during a process like this or what happened last season when Jones held out until Week 2 of the season, Jones can be a pretty big Twitter troll. A fan tweeted at him, letting him know if he left the team, Jones would be dead to him. Now, that's a little extreme, but Jones responded on Twitter with the handshake emoji, which is almost like saying, "Okay, bet."
He has told fans to "Shut up" before on Twitter, among a lot of other things, but it's all in good love, and Jones just wants to troll fans. He has done that so much that we have missed some other tweets that have shown that he was always going to come back to the Chiefs, even before he yelled it at the Super Bowl parade.
In 2020, he did a Q&A on Twitter, and a fan asked if he was staying with the Chiefs for his entire career. He responded with, "That's always been the plan. From day 1."
On March 29, 2022, Jones tweeted, "I'm here for life."
On March 12, 2023, a few weeks after winning his second Super Bowl title, Jones tweeted, "I'm a chief for life. I will not play for another franchise."
Jones has been telling us for a while that he is not going anywhere, and we just aren't listening to him. This deal signifies that he will potentially be around for his entire career, as in five years, he will be close to 35 and likely will sign another contract with the Chiefs that will see him through to retirement.
The Chiefs got their guy back, and the Chiefs Kingdom is ecstatic.
