One week of free agency has gone by in the NFL and the Cleveland Browns were active for most of it.

Still, work remains that needs to be done to build out the roster for next season. While much of the roster is already set, the Browns do have some needs that they can look at the draft to fulfill.

The Browns got a jump on the needs just before free agency by trading for WR Jerry Jeudy from the Denver Broncos. It took care of one thing they had to do this offseason. With that being said, I’m digging in on a few positions I’d like to see Cleveland target in the draft.

Offensive line

Cleveland’s offensive line is very good and could be even better if Jedrick Wills Jr. can finally take a step. Jack Conklin will be back healthy and Dawand Jones is ready to start — that is something he’s already shown. Still, with Conklin often injured and Joel Bitonio aging, the Browns should target a guard or tackle high if one is there early at good value.

When Bitonio or Conklin hangs it up, the Browns will be able to slide a player in on a rookie contract ideally. While Jones played the right side last year, he could end il being a candidate to take over at left tackle eventually. Cleveland has always invested in the offensive trenches and there is no incentive to stop now.

Linebacker

The Browns have just two linebackers back from last year with experience to join two signings they made on the roster. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Jordan Hicks, and Devin Bush are now the top three at the position.

While JOK is a budding star and Hicks can be a MIKE or a SAM, the depth falls off after that. Bush hasn’t shown to be a starter since his rookie year and guys like Charlie Thomas and Mohamoud Diabate don’t have much experience. Tony Fields adds solid depth to the unit but he hasn’t been more than that for the team.

Cleveland should look to add a linebacker if the value is there to round out the depth. Ideally, it’s a backer that has some versatility. This draft is going to be all about value with only having five scheduled picks.

Running back

Cleveland made one free agency addition via Nyheim Hines who will add special teams ability and a pass-catching threat. With Nick Chubb’s status to begin the season in doubt, the Browns need to add a back that can run between the tackles to pair with Jerome Ford.

The Browns need to start thinking about life after Chubb because it could come at any time. Heck, it looked like that time was Week 2 of last season at first. Adding more youth to the position would be smart for costs and roster building.
