Somewhat surprising news came through for Ohio State last week when it was made known that running backs coach Tony Alford was leaving for the same position at Michigan.

Since then, Ryan Day has been handling the running back coaching while the Buckeyes are in search of their next coach to lead the position.

How are the Buckeyes handling Alford leaving for Michigan? Simple, it’s about what Ohio State has built.

“The brotherhood is strong here. That’s something we preach a lot – the relationships with each other, the love for each other. Ultimately, that’s what the power of the unit is all about, so the guys in that room are strong. They’re going to rely on each other.”

Day revealed that newly hired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly will be involved in the hiring. The search for that hire is ongoing.

“Right now, the focus is on trying to find the right person,” Day said. “I think it’s the best-running back room in the country right now, so I think it’s an exciting job. The candidate pool has been excellent.

“Whoever we hire is going to have an unbelievable opportunity and a great group of guys.”

It is not often that you walk into a college running back room with two guys who have and can again break the 1,000-yard mark. TreVeyon Henderson came back to school after having 926 yards and 11 touchdowns in 10 games played. As a freshman, Henderson ran for 1,248 yards a couple of years ago.

Junior Quinshon Judkins came over in the transfer portal from Ole Miss where he had a total of 2,725 yards over the last two seasons. Dallan Hayden has experience with the Buckeyes as well.

Expect Ohio State to land on a new hire before long as they’re in spring ball and summer workouts will be here before we know it.
