Roster cutdown day is dramatic and it is sad for so many players who see their dreams come to an end, but the setting of the initial 53-man group is far from the end of the story for the 49ers or any NFL team.

Teams make a raft of changes in the days after the first 53 is announced, and the roster remains a constantly evolving puzzle even after the season has begun.

As such, players who do not have iron-clad roles on the roster can never really feel sure of keeping their spot for the entire season and, for the 49ers, there are three who stand out as being in danger of being moved on either before the season or during the campaign.

Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, LB

The 49ers love the athleticism and the versatility the former college safety brings. He has the physical gifts to play the slot as well as down in the box and would likely have little difficulty stepping up to the starting lineup in the event of an injury given his experience in the 49ers' defense.

Yet following the preseason emergence of Jalen Graham and Dee Winters, who both made the 53-man roster, the 49ers have a surplus at linebacker. For as much as Flannigan-Fowles is a useful backup to have on the defense, it would be no surprise if the 49ers flipped him to a linebacker-needy team for draft capital or in a player swap to address depth at other areas such as edge and offensive line.

Danny Gray, WR

A shoulder injury may send Gray to short-term injured reserve. That is obviously not where the former third-round pick wanted to start the campaign after a one-catch rookie season and he could become a trade candidate if others impress in his absence.

The main candidate to potentially put Gray on the block is rookie Ronnie Bell, who was outstanding for the 49ers in preseason. If the seventh-round pick excels and the Niners, who have speed threat and kick returner Ray-Ray McCloud eventually set to return from a broken wrist, feel they can get in-season value for Gray, his brief time with San Francisco could come to an abrupt end.

Isaiah Oliver, CB

The 49ers kept Oliver on the 53 despite a hugely underwhelming preseason. His contract didn’t leave them much of a choice, given San Francisco guaranteed him nearly $3 million over two years.

But Oliver inspired no confidence with his exhibition performances at nickel, and he now likely won’t even start at the position. He looks set to be reduced to playing the role of ‘big nickel’, covering tight ends and bigger wide receivers from the slot.

It’s imperative he uses his physical frame to thrive in that capacity. Fail to do so, and he could be a candidate for an in-season departure given the young talent the 49ers – who are hopeful of sneaking rookie D’Shawn Jamison onto the practice squad – have at corner.
