The 49ers are light on edge rush depth, and they now have an opportunity to address it by bringing back the architect of one of their great postseason moments.
Having signed him in free agency following a spell with San Francisco that lasted over two seasons for the defensive end, the Raiders cut Jordan Willis as part of their moves to get to the 53-man roster limit on Tuesday.
As a vested veteran, Willis is not subject to waivers, meaning the 49ers could quickly bring him back to bolster their edge-rushing options, which are especially low as Nick Bosa's holdout risks dragging into the regular season.
Willis delivered one of the most famous plays of the Kyle Shanahan era in the playoffs in the 2021 season, his blocked punt in the snow against the Packers returned for a game-tying touchdown by Talanoa Hufanga as the Niners claimed a Divisional Round win at Lambeau Field.
Beyond that moment of special teams brilliance, Willis proved himself to be an extremely valuable rotational pass rusher, one who can win consistently with his get-off and his bull rush.
The 49ers value explosiveness above all else in their pass rushers, and that is something Willis has in spades.
Even with Bosa expected to eventually sign a long-term extension, the 49ers could greatly benefit from boosting their edge-rush depth with a dependable veteran whom defensive line coach Kris Kocurek has great familiarity.
The moves on the margins can have a tremendous bearing on a team's fortunes in a season. Bringing Willis back into the fold to swell the edge ranks is one that could make a huge difference for the 49ers and their much-vaunted defensive front.
3 49ers that aren’t safe despite making initial 53-man roster
It would be no surprise to see any of this trio traded.
