The 49ers officially announced they have activated Nick Bosa to the 53-man roster after he signed a record-breaking contract extension this week, clearing him to feature in the season opener with the Steelers.
Austin Bryant was released to make space for the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. However, his hopes of resurrecting his career with the Niners are still alive after San Francisco confirmed he had been released to the practice squad and subsequently promoted to the roster for the Pittsburgh game.
Also promoted from the practice squad for Week 1 was linebacker Curtis Robinson. Kicker Matthew Wright, signed to the practice squad as insurance against Jake Moody's quad injury, was released. Moody was cleared to play on Friday.
With Bosa back at the starting defensive end spot and Bryant kept around in a a capacity that will likely see him boomerang between the practice squad and the active roster several times, the 49ers' edge depth looks substantially better than it did for much of training camp.
Across from Bosa, either Drake Jackson or Clelin Ferrell will start at the other defensive end spot. Ferrell's encouraging preseason likely increased confidence he can fill in for Bosa if the Niners don't feel he is ready for a full workload after missing all of training camp and preseason.
A fourth-round pick of the Lions in 2019 who has struggled with injuries, Bryant provides the 49ers with an explosive rotational pass rusher. He had 4.5 sacks two years ago and will be looking to rediscover that kind of form. San Francisco, meanwhile, knows it can get reliable if play off the edge and the interior from versatile veteran Kerry Hyder Jr.
Edge looked an area of concern before Bosa's holdout came to an end, now it is a clear strength going into the Niners' first test of the new campaign.
The 49ers’ hopes of continuing dominance over NFC West rival just received a huge boost
They’ll be heavy favourites in Week 2.
