The details on Nick Bosa's contract extension were finally released on Saturday and they revealed another record broken by the 49ers star despite the deal following a familiar backloaded structure.

San Francisco this week ended Bosa's holdout as they signed him to a five-year, $170 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

The headline numbers are eye-watering, and Bosa will see most of the money promised to him, with a staggering $88 million fully guaranteed. That figure surpasses T.J. Watt's $80 million for the largest such guarantee given to a defender.

The 49ers won't start to feel the pain from the contract until 2026, when Bosa's cap hit is over $42 million. It is followed by a cap hit of $52 million in 2027 and another of $42 in 2028. The contract also features a void year in 2029.

A restructure may well come before the cap numbers really start to hurt. For now, though, the 49ers lowered Bosa's 2023 hit by around $7 million to just $11.01 million.

That change, combined with the 49ers restructuring Arik Armstead's contract, having done the same with those of Trent Williams and George Kittle, means San Francisco is in an enviable position.

The 49ers now have $42.4 million in cap space, the most in the NFL, per Over The Cap.

While that is ample space for the 49ers to potentially take another big swing on an impact player during the season, the likelier motivation for San Francisco is to ensure they have cap space to roll over into the next year so they are in the best position to keep most of a loaded an extensive roster intact.

One thing that is for sure is the future of Bosa, who will be staying put with the 49ers paying a prettier penny than some anticipated to tie a franchise cornerstone down for the long term.
