Panthers HC Frank Reich takes the blame for Bryce Young's first career interception

Turnovers aren't always solely on the player that committed them.

And on Saturday, Bryce Young threw two interceptions. However, on Monday, after watching the film, Reich decided the first interception wasn't Young's fault primarily.

“On the first interception, I put a lot of that interception on me," Reich said. "We got in a bad position. We got the OPI called, and then we’re backed up. And then we get a delay of game call. And that delay of game was 100 percent on me. I had a miscommunication with Bryce. That miscommunication was 100 percent on me and it caused the delay of game. So, puts us, even more, backed up and put us in a bad position. So that one’s on me.”

Here is another look at the Young interception:

That initial interception really started because the Panthers were in a bad position. With the Panthers backed up in their own territory and Young attempting to make something out of nothing, he turned to his tight end Hayden Hurst and instead found Falcons safety Jessie Bates III.

It was a turnover that directly led to the first touchdown of the day.

Bates was also the perpetrator of Young's second interception in a nearly identical scenario. With that, however, Young was willing to take the blame for not seeing the Falcons' offseason addition.

“Jessie did a great job on both. He’s a veteran guy, plays great in space,” Young said. “You can’t just make assumptions. It’s just doing a better job of seeing, making sure I’m checking and not just going off what it should be on an X and O.”

Though, in the second interception, Young wanted to take the blame, Reich was even willing to fall on the sword for that turnover as well.

“I would say—that one, too—if I were saying it wasn’t 100 percent on Bryce,” he added. “There was a little something in the play that broke down. It was a small breakdown in the play that could’ve affected it. But again, we just have to execute better overall.”

Heading into a Week 2 matchup with the New Orleans Saints Monday night, Young and the offense are looking to rid themselves of the turnover bug as soon as possible.
