The 2023 New York Giants draft class is really headlined by three names. That includes first-round defensive back Deonte Banks, second-round offensive lineman John Michael Schmitz and third-round wide receiver Jalin Hyatt.
All three are primed for big roles as rookies. Banks flashed in the preseason opener, Schmitz looks like a plug-and-play center and Hyatt hauled in his first professional touchdown in the latest preseason action.
But there is another rookie that is turning heads in a big way for the Giants during the preseason: defensive lineman Jordon Riley. The team’s seventh-round selection this past April is making a big impression in the Big Apple.
Riley is a big-bodied defensive lineman that was drafted out of Oregon this past April. At 6-foot-5 and 325 pounds, he has the size and frame to clog up the middle of the defense. He’s done just that this preseason.
He made a pair of tackles in the team’s latest game. But more than that, he uses his size and strength to take up blocks, allowing his teammates to clean up the play for a minimal gain.
Riley was effective in short-yard situations, even forcing a turnover on downs during a fourth down stop against the Lions. The rookie made a tackle for a loss and flashed his run stopping ability in a big way for the Giants.
Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence leads the way for the Giants defense, especially after cashing in on a big way earlier this season. There’s reasons to be excited about the potential of Riley playing alongside Lawrence this upcoming season.
It’s still early and week one is still approaching. With that said, Jordon Riley is turning heads and appears headed towards making the roster after being selected in the final round in this year’s draft.
