New York Giants assistant general manager Brandon Brown thinks rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt can do a lot more in the NFL than he did with the Tennessee Vols in college.
Brown spoke to reporters on Monday morning and he explained why the Giants fell in love with Hyatt and why they believe his talent will allow him to evolve into a more complete wide receiver in the NFL.
"It's doing your due diligence," said Brown when asked about Hyatt. "It's one, knowing what he was asked to do at Tennessee. It's us having those extra conversations with his position coach at Tennessee, talking to the coaching staff at Tennessee. Knowing what their system called for because what he's doing for us, he has more talent in his body than the role he was asked to play at Tennessee."
"So you look at the skill set," continued Brown. "Does he have bend, balance, and burst? Can he get out of breaks? Was he asked to run a limited route tree at Tennessee versus what he can do for us? I think for us, going that full circle of doing all of your diligence and finding the evidence. And it was a great process. And I say it again, the synergy. You talk about the full process with Jalin, hats off to our college department. They identified Jalin early and that allowed [Giants decision makers] to go see him against Alabama. It allowed me to go see him later against Missouri."
"All those things add to who he is and the upside. You see him making extra effort in terms of blocking downfield in practice — that adds to who he is. He's a great young man and we're excited for him."
Tennessee's offense puts players in position to succeed. But it's not a magic trick. You can play or you can't. And the Giants recognized that Hyatt can play.
UT's offense won't turn a wide receiver into an NFL player. But it will put the eyes of NFL scouts on that wide receiver. And from there, it's the players' abilities and natural talent that will allow them to have a shot to excel in the NFL.
