Cut down day in the NFL is never easy, and it's no different for the Dolphins' general manager Chris Grier.

Tough decisions must be made.  Roster depth and needs at different positions must be considered, and accommodations for existing injuries must also be taken into account.  For example, Jalen Ramsey must be carried onto the initial 53-man roster in order to be placed on injured reserve and activated later in the season.

As such, that means that a name that Dolphins fans are used to seeing on the field may not see his name on the list of players included on the team's initial 53-man roster list.  And a strong candidate to be that player is RB Myles Gaskin.

Gaskin has been a name and face that Dolphins fans have come to know well over the last four years.  Selected by the Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2019 draft, he's appeared in 38 games over four season, with 17 starts from 2020-2021.  He has totaled 1355 rushing yards with 7 touchdowns and 701 receiving yards with 6 touchdowns for his career.

Unfortunately for him, the Dolphins have made moves that have put his roster spot in jeopardy.  Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson, Jr., whom the Dolphins both re-signed in the offseason, are effectively roster locks.  2023 third-round pick De'Von Achane is also a likely lock.  That leaves likely just one remaining spot between him, Salvon Ahmed, and Chris Brooks.

Ahmed was awesome last week, going for 99 yards on 12 carries while adding 32 receiving yards on 4 catches with a touchdown.  It's been far and away the best performance of the preseason by any back.

And, of course, the rumblings about the Dolphins' alleged interest in Colts RB Jonathan Taylor can't fully be ignored.  Taylor would bump everyone down a notch on the pecking order, which would almost assuredly put Ahmed, Gaskin, and Brooks all off the roster.

Gaskin still has one more chance to change the narrative, as the Dolphins will face the Jacksonville Jaguars in the preseason finale.  Gaskin ran well against the Falcons in the preseason opener, going for 57 yards on 7 carries highlighted by a 35-yard run.  If anything, that's the type of performance that merits a spot on the roster.

However, unless he can repeat that performance with another splashy play or two on Saturday night or otherwise outshine his counterpart wearing #26, Gaskin could be the odd man out next Tuesday when rosters must shrink to 53.
