The Panthers have a quarterback conundrum on their hands.

With Bryce Young and Andy Dalton guaranteed to make the roster, the odd man out is Matt Corral, a second-year signal-caller who, with the new NFL rule, could be the Panthers' third quarterback on the depth chart.

But that doesn't mean the Panthers aren't going to cut him.

“Matt’s incredibly athletic. He’s got a really strong arm. He’s worked as hard as anybody in the building. He spent a lot of time in this building,” Frank Reich said. “Josh McCown has done a really great job. Those two have put a lot of time in together. So happy with the progress that he’s made and he’s had a lot of snaps in the preseason, and I think he’s done a good job.”

Reich added: “As far as keeping the third quarterback on the roster, obviously with the new rule, that’s something that has to be considered. (General manager) Scott (Fitterer) and I have had several initial discussions about that. That’s a decision that will be made here in the next couple of days. There are a lot of factors that go into that, but (we’re) happy with the progress that Matt has made.”

So, what should the Panthers do with Carrol moving forward? The answer is simple — scout team.

Corral was inconsistent during the preseason, not surprising after he missed his entire rookie season following foot surgery. And with more time on the scout team, Corral could get another year to grow by sitting in the QB meetings with Josh McCown while serving as insurance if Young or Dalton misses time.

The direction the Panthers should go is straightforward with Corral — put him on the scout team and let him develop for another year.
