The 49ers are unsure whether third-round rookie kicker Jake Moody will be ready for Week 1, but the latest signs don't inspire much confidence.

Moody is a doubt for the season opener against the Steelers on Sept. 10 with a quad strain.

The 49ers did have a potential insurance policy in Zane Gonzalez, but he suffered a calf injury in warmups of the preseason finale and faces weeks on the sideline.

Gonzalez will almost certainly be cut, and the 49ers' latest moves don't point to any giant strides from Moody in his recovery.

San Francisco, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, worked out kickers Tristan Vizcaino and Taylor Russolino on Monday.

Vizcaino played a game with the Niners in 2020. He kicked three field goals, including a 47-yarder, and two extra points in their season finale that year, a 26-23 defeat to the Seahawks.

But the reliability he displayed in that contest was not present during his time with the Cowboys this training camp. Per ESPN's Todd Archer, Vizcaino went 22 of 35 during padded practices.

Russolino last kicked for the Arlington Renegades of the XFL. He has played in one NFL game in his pro career, missing his only field goal attempt for the Broncos in a Week 15 loss to the Bills in 2020. He also failed with two of his three extra point attempts.

Neither projects as an enticing option and, at this point, the workouts are likely just the 49ers doing their due diligence.

Moody still has a little under two weeks to recover and the 49ers would ideally like to avoid having to sign another kicker to their roster.

A divisive selection with the 99th overall pick, Moody missed his first two field goal attempts with the 49ers in preseason against the Raiders. He subsequently missed an extra point versus the Broncos, but kicked three field goals including the game-winner in a 21-20 victory.

That effort only just squeaked inside the upright, though, and regardless of when he makes his regular-season debut, Moody's preseason struggles should make him all the more determined to get his first competitive games with the Niners off on the right foot.
