The San Francisco 49ers face the Pittsburgh Steelers in their season opener, and on Wednesday they released their first injury report ahead of a tricky road game.

Injuries are always a matter of great concern with the Niners given their history in that area in recent years. There were several notable names on Wednesday's report, however, on the day that saw the 49ers agree to an extension with Nick Bosa, the good news kept on coming.

Injury report observations

The headline takeaway surrounds tight end George Kittle, who did not practice on Monday but now appears on track to play in a game where his blocking may be even more important than his play as a pass-catcher.

Starting safeties Tashaun Gipson and Talanoa Hufanga had already been on course to play, and the back seven will be further strengthened by the seemingly imminent return of Oren Burks, the starting SAM linebacker in base looks.

It's a double boost for the special teams, with rookie kicker Jake Moody tracking to make his regular-season debut after a shaky preseason, and Ray-Ray McCloud cleared to return to practice following a broken wrist suffered in camp. He looks set to reassume his role as San Francisco's starting returner.

Trent Williams' absence was not mentioned at Kyle Shanahan's press conference, which was dominated by Bosa questions, though it is highly likely it was just a veteran's rest day.
