The Kansas City Chiefs and star DT Chris Jones remain at a stalemate in negotiations over a long-term contract extension.
The team's 2022 sack leader has continued holding out, racking up hefty fines and a boatload of cryptic social media posts in the process. Jones has one year remaining on his four-year deal, but he seeks a long-term deal that will pay him as one of the league's top-paid players at his position.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport recently appeared on The Pat McAfee Show and provided an update on some contract negotiations around the league. He confirmed that the Chiefs have officially made an offer to Jones.
"So Chris Jones, holding out. The Chiefs have made a big offer to Chris Jones," Rapoport said. "Obviously, not big enough. We'll see how close he gets to Aaron Donald money. I think that's probably. . . I don't know if he's shooting to be above Aaron Donald but like that's the ballpark. And he is an awesome player. So we'll see if they get a resolution."
Rams DT Aaron Donald's contract has proven to be an aberration of sorts. He is making over $31M per year on average with $95M in total guarantees, yet every player at the defensive tackle position to sign a long-term deal this offseason has slotted in well under those marks. That's a barrage of big-name defensive linemen, such as Jets DT Quinnen Williams, Titans DT Jeffrey Simmons, and Giants DT Dexter Lawrence.
According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the Chiefs' proposed offer would make Jones the second-highest-paid player at the defensive tackle position in terms of per-year average. Right now, Williams holds that mark while making $24M annually.
Kansas City seems to be in the right ballpark. The hold-up, in my estimation, seems to be regarding guarantees. Specifically, the number that Jones would make in 2024 (over $30 million) should the team use the franchise tag on him.
Chiefs have no intention of trading star defender
If you thought the Kansas City Chiefs might take the route of Tyreek Hill with Chris Jones, think again.
