The Kansas City Chiefs are set to square off with the New Orleans Saints in Week 1 of the 2023 NFL preseason.

The quest for a repeat championship won't officially begin until September, but the preseason is one of the primary tools used for evaluating the 90-man offseason roster. This will be the first opportunity for a number of new additions to the team, whether free agents, 2023 NFL draft picks, or undrafted players. They'll look to make the absolute most of their opportunities and impress upon the coaching staff that they're worthy of making this Super Bowl squad.

Justyn Ross' preseason debut

Ross sat out the 2022 NFL preseason (and regular season) after he had surgery on his foot that would land him on injured reserve. The former Clemson product has all the talent in the world, but injuries derailed both his college and NFL career. Now that he's fully healthy, Ross should be able to put his talent on display. He has a unique blend of size and speed that has popped out during the course of Chiefs training camp practices down in St. Joseph, Missouri. All he has to do now is put it together in a game.

Fab five (four) redux

The Chiefs' defensive secondary will feature four second-year players this season. It'd feature five, but Nazeeh Johnson suffered a season-ending knee injury. Trent McDuffie, Joshua Williams, Jaylen Watson, and Bryan Cook are each poised to be starters on defense in their second season with the team. McDuffie has looked tremendous in camp and Cook has taken his game to another level as the quarterback of the defense. Watson and Williams are each a year wiser to the NFL game. Look for growth from all of these players at the onset of the preseason.

5 players to keep an eye on (other than Justyn Ross):

  • WR Skyy Moore: After a disappointing rookie campaign, Moore is expected to be one of the Chiefs' top options at wide receiver. He won't play much, but it'll be encouraging if he could get going in the snaps he does get.

  • DT Daniel Wise: With Tershawn Wharton ruled out and Chris Jones not expected to play, Wise should be the team's starting three-technique. How will the former Kansas Jayhawk perform?

  • DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah: The first-round draft pick had a slow start this offseason due to a hand injury. The rookie has really started to come on in training camp during recent weeks, but will he be able to carry that success over in his first preseason action?

  • CB Ekow Boye-Doe: This rookie entered the equation following Nazeeh Johnson's injury. He's a bit undersized at 177 pounds, which is a point of concern for special teams coordinator Dave Toub.

  • LG Mike Caliendo: A versatile piece who can play both guard and center. Can this second-year UDFA gain some ground on a draft pick like Darian Kinnard?
