The New York Giants dropped its first game of the preseason to the Detroit Lions, but there were still some positives to take away from the action. Multiple members of the New York drat class showed out in the opener.

Cornerback Deonte Banks performed well in the time that he saw the field, not allowing a catch in three opportunities on Friday night. Additionally, offensive lineman John Michael Schmitz impressed, too.

Schmitz was the team's second-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. Out of Minnesota, JMS was widely regarded as the best center in the class. And he already looks to be on pace to be the team's starter when the season kicks off in less than a month.

In the preseason opener, JMS showed signs of being a plug-and-play along the offensive line in New York. The rookie played just 19 snaps in pass pro versus the Lions, but he made his presence felt when he was on the field.

Schmitz did not allow a pressure or a sack against Detroit. He was active in run blocking and his pass protection revealed why many were high on him coming out of college. It seems as if the Giants have their answer in the middle of the line of scrimmage.

Based on Friday night, Daniel Jones has to be excited to see the field. Schmitz has shown no signs of missing any beats during his transition to the NFL through one preseason game.

Schmitz has been practicing with the first-team and is clearly earning the trust of the coaching staff. It remains to be seen how many snaps that he will get for the remainder of the preseason, but the Giants have to be satisfied with their second-rounder.
