Everybody knows Derrick Henry is the lead back in Nashville. Behind Henry, the Titans have rookie Tyjae Spears set to receive playing time as a change-of-pace back.
Behind that duo, the depth is a little shaky. Hassan Haskins didn't look great in the first preseason game and is dealing with off-field issues. Julius Chestnut is an average depth back, and Jonathan Ward was having a good summer before getting injured.
Clearly, the Titans' brass thought an outside addition was needed to this group.
Early on Monday, it was reported that the Titans were bringing in a trio of players for a workout, including RB Jacques Patrick.
Patrick's workout must have been impressive because the team inked the back to a two-year deal, per NFL insider Aaron Wilson.
Patrick most recently played for the San Antonio Brahmas of the XFL. Patrick played in 10 games in 2023 and finished with the second-most rushing yards in the league, with 443. Patrick found the end zone five times and had a long run of 32 yards.
Before starring in the XFL, Patrick bounced around several NFL teams. Patrick has spent time with the Bengals, 49ers, Panthers, Ravens, and Broncos, mostly as a practice squad player. The only carries in his NFL career came in 2021 for the Niners, where he collected two carries for 12 yards.
At 6'2". 234 lbs, Patrick is a bruiser who doesn't have breakaway speed but he can be an effective third down or goalline back. It will be interesting to see if he can show enough to beat out Haskins, Chestnut, and Ward. The two-year contract shows some level of commitment from the team.
Three Titans who impressed in preseason opener against Bears
The Titans lost, but still had a few standout performers in Chicago.
