Jim Harbaugh is a revered figure in the eyes of 49ers' fans, but the now Michigan head coach is in hot water with the NCAA.
Per multiple reports, Harbaugh is facing a four-game suspension for the 2023 season.
It would serve as a negotiated ban related to an apparent Level I violation of recruiting laws by Harbaugh.
If finalized, the suspension would see Harbaugh miss Michigan's games with Eastern Carolina, Bowling Green, UNLV and Rutgers.
Per ESPN, a statement from Harbaugh's attorney, Thomas Mars, read:
"We are continuing to work cooperatively with the NCAA staff on an enforcement matter. At this time, we are not allowed to comment on possible penalties or other aspects of the matter."
Harbaugh went 44-19-1 in four seasons as the 49ers head coach. He led them to three successive NFC Championship games in his first three years, losing in Super Bowl XLVII to the Ravens at the end of the 2012 campaign. He never had a losing season with the Niners before being controversially fired after losing a power struggle with then-GM Trent Baalke.
The hatchet now apparently buried with owner Jed York, Harbaugh attended a celebration of that Super Bowl team at Levi's Stadium last season.
Harbaugh has been linked with a return to the NFL in each of the last two offseasons but remained with Michigan as he attempts to lead his alma mater to a National Championship. The Wolverines lost to TCU in the College Football Playoff semifinals last season.
