Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase had a trick up his sleeve after superstar quarterback Joe Burrow was injured in practice earlier this week.
Burrow's injury (a calf injury that's expected to keep him out for several weeks) was obviously a massive story in the NFL world.
The former LSU star is expected to become the highest paid player in the NFL before the start of the regular season.
And as one of the biggest stars in the sport, the last thing anyone wants to see is Burrow miss a significant amount of time.
Fortunately of the Bengals, it sounds like he should be ready for the start of the regular season.
Still, in those early moments after the injury happened, there was a lot of uncertainty regarding Burrow's status.
Chase, who was teammates with Burrow at LSU, was approached by reporters in the locker room after practice and he was quickly asked about Burrow.
The Pro Bowl wide receiver told reporters that Burrow gave him a nod as if to say that he's going to be alright.
Beyond that moment, Chase wasn't able to share much else with reporters about Burrow's status.
And that was by design.
Chase told the gathered media that he wanted to talk to reporters before he spoke with Burrow that way he wouldn't have any information to share with reporters.
"Not yet, I was waiting for y'all to get through with this first," said Chase when asked if he had checked on Burrow yet.
That comment led to this exchange with a reporter:
Reporter: "So you didn't have info for us?
Chase: "There you go. I outsmarted y'all today."
“I wasn’t really worried. I believe he’s alright. He’s a strong, strong dude. You know he’s hard headed sometimes, but he’s strong dude so we’ll be alright.” — Ja’Marr Chase on Joe Burrow immediately after Burrow’s calf injury.
NFL players are incredibly media savvy these days so it's not a surprise that Chase outsmarted reporters after Burrow's injury. Chase knew he'd be asked about Burrow and he knew the easiest way to avoid giving out any information was to simply not have any information.
Chase isn't just smooth on the field. He's smooth off it, too.
