Cleveland Browns’ newest defensive tackle’s reasoning isn’t likely one that has been said about the team often.

When Shelby Harris signed with the Browns recently, he did it because of one main reason.

Simply put, Harris wants to win he said.

“I felt like out of all the teams I was talking to, they’re the most primed to win,” Harris said in his first media availability yesterday.

That wasn’t the only reason, however, as the veteran defender is excited about who he is coming to play for.

“How can I turn down the chance to play with those guys up front and playing it in Coach (Jim) Schwartz’ defense. Him coming out of retirement, him coming out coaching, I can’t pass that up. It’s truly a D lineman’s dream to play in.”

Schwartz is known for unleashing a tenacious defensive line that gets after the opposing team’s quarterback. Additionally, Harris is ecstatic about all of the pieces that are going to be around him. It can only make his life easier on the field.

“You got Pro Bowl guys and Z (Za’Darius Smith) and Myles (Garrett) and then Dalvin (Tomlinson), who will be a Pro Bowler, and Ogbo (Okoronkwo) who’s a great rusher himself, and then with Jordan (Elliott), and everyone. To be in this group and have talent from top to bottom, it makes my job a lot easier,” Harris explained.

Cleveland overhauled the defensive line this offseason after it was worse than mediocre outside of Garrett last season. After Garrett’s 16 sacks, no one else had more than DT Taven Bryan’s three.

This defensive line under Schwartz’s system should allow a complete 360 to happen from last season. Things should play out a lot differently.

“It gives D lineman freedom,” Harris said of the system. “Everything is with your get-off and your tenacity and just going and making plays. His defense, it starts with the D line. And like I said, it’s a D lineman’s dream. Think about the D lineman he’s had play for him, and it’s just something that I want to add my name to that list.”

When it comes to when we’ll be able to see Harris on the field for the first time, the 10-year veteran is ready to go whenever.

“Hey, whatever they ask me–I’m willing to do. One thing is, I’ve kept myself in great shape, so I’m ready for anything.”
