Kansas City Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney remains absent from practice as he recovers from knee surgery.
Toney had surgery in late July to repair a partial tear to his meniscus. This came after the wideout injured his knee in a punt return drill at the onset of training camp practice.
The expectation has been that Toney will be ready for Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season, but some new information from Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi suggests that they'll take the cautious approach when Toney does return to the practice field.
"You know, we'll just see how he is health-wise," Borgonzi said. "I mean, Rick will get with him and coach and kind of see where he is health-wise. We want to make sure he's 100%. We want to make sure he's there for the games. We know what he brings to the table, which is his playmaking ability. We're not going to rush it. I don't think we have any expectations right now. We're just going to take it day-by-day and see how he is."
The Chiefs are right to be cautious with Toney as injuries have been a major struggle during the course of his career. Borgonzi hit the nail on his head with his comments in that, the team knows exactly what they have in Toney. He was lightning in a bottle when he was on the field healthy last season. Look no further than the impact he made in limited snaps in Super Bowl LVII (a touchdown and the longest punt return in Super Bowl history).
Even if Toney is back at practice for Week 1, that doesn't necessarily mean that he'll be 100% or even play in the game. Exercising caution at this juncture, however, could prove to be useful down the line when the games count the most.
