(Defensive) starters to make their preseason debut
Whether it's for one play or 11, the starting defense will be out there for Cincinnati to begin the game. Nickelback Mike Hilton explained this week that the secondary needs to continue establishing chemistry with so many new faces starting together, and getting in-game reps with one another is a big step in the process. Expect one series and one series only, however long it may be.
3 Bengals players to watch
- QB Trevor Siemian: One of these quarterbacks has to show something, anything to the coaches that they deserve the backup role behind Burrow. Siemian will get the first crack at it after going in the second half last week with the third-stringers. The veteran's mobility and ability to push the ball down the field on the run should give him opportunities to make plays that Jake Browning couldn't against the Green Bay Packers. The time to create movement in this meek position battle is now.
- WR Charlie Jones: His preseason debut was far from spectacular, but Jones is also playing injured with what's at least a partially torn labrum. If he's opting to play through the pain, the excuses will eventually stop flowing in. Can he break off a decent punt return, or create an explosive play out of the slot? There's definite room for improvement for the team's latest fourth-round draft pick.
- DT Domenique Davis: He was somewhat dominant last week, but can he stack two great games in a row? Davis will need to keep his momentum going if he's to make a legit case for the initial 53-man roster. He had a team-high four pressures on just 10 true pass rushing snaps against the Packers. Continuing to disrupt the pocket as a defensive tackle will keep him in the conversation.
