The 49ers have still yet to sign Nick Bosa to a contract extension, and it's unlikely the reigning Defensive Player of the Year will report to training camp until that happens.
Bosa is poised to become the NFL's highest-paid edge rusher after a stunning 18.5-sack season in 2023.
But he and the Niners haven't come to a resolution as yet, and general manager John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan don't expect Bosa to show up to practice without a deal.
Said Lynch at the opening press conference of training camp:
"Everybody's reporting today. "12:30 (p.m. PT) is our first kind of event as a team. That will be our conditioning test, our tempo run as we call it. I've seen various players, I have not seen Nick. I would expect he's not here to start off. We're working. We're having really good communication with (agent) Brian Ayrault. He's got good, competent and people we have an immense amount of respect for working for him. And we're working diligently to try to come to an agreement."
Doing a deal with Bosa was always likely to be challenging given what he is likely to command after ending the season with the highest accolade for a defensive player. His contract may well see him earn over $30 million a year, but the 49ers will likely be keen to build some flexibility into that contract.
In the meantime, it is wise of Bosa not to risk injury by showing up for practice. The 49ers will not have any concerns about him being in shape for the season, so will not lose any sleep if he is away from the team for a week of practice.
Obviously, the longer the situation drags on, the more concerning it will become. However, both the 49ers and Bosa have expressed a great desire to get a deal done, and there is no reason at this point to believe they will fail in that goal. Deadlines, like the start of camp, tend to spur action, and it would be no surprise to see Bosa putting pen to paper in the coming days.
