The 49ers added some much-needed cornerback depth to their roster on Tuesday with the signing of veteran Terrance Mitchell.
San Francisco announced the deal after John Lynch confirmed at the opening press conference of training camp that rookie corner Darrell Luter Jr. had hyperextended his knee and suffered a deep bone bruise.
Luter's absence had left the Niners' depth behind starting outside corners Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir looking shaky, with Ambry Thomas the only backup with any significant starting experience.
Mitchell brings experience in spades, having played eight seasons in the league.
He also offers familiarity with new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. Mitchell played in Wilks' defense during his time with the Browns. Wilks was the Browns' defensive coordinator in 2019, the penultimate year of Mitchell's three-season spell in Cleveland.
Though Mitchell only appeared in 11 games, starting five, for the Titans last season, his recent numbers in terms of on-ball production are impressive. He had four pass breakups and a pick for the Titans in 2022. Prior to that, he recorded 13 pass breakups in his final year with the Browns and 10 and an interception for the Texans in 2021.
Such production is in part a result of opponents' willingness to target Mitchell, who has surrendered a positive Expected Points Added per target average in each of the last three seasons, per Sports Info Solutions.
Still, for the immediate future, it is valuable for the Niners to have a dependable veteran who knows the defense and won't be fazed if he makes the roster and is called upon in an emergency situation. The 49ers will hope it never comes to that, but they should feel better about their cornerback depth with Mitchell in the building.
