With the Colts currently dealing with injuries in the backfield on top of contract disputes with star Jonathan Taylor the team elected to sign veteran RB Kenyan Drake.

While Drake's presence likely doesn't point towards Taylor's trade request being granted by the team. Drake's arrival doesn't bode well for backs who are currently battling for a roster spot.

But who on the Colts does this signing affect specifically?

Jake Funk

Jake Funk joined the Colt’s midseason last year, which makes this training camp his 1st with the Colts. The Los Angeles Rams drafted Funk during the 7th round of the 2021 NFL Draft. In his three-year career, he’s only been able to produce two carries. Funk actually has more career NFL tackles than carries, with 3.

Funk's odds of making the roster were already slim, but the signing of Drake is a big shot at his chances. Funk's best chance would be his experience as a kick returner with the Rams. But so far, though, camp Funk hasn't been a part of return drills as the team has focused on Dallis Flowers, Isaiah McKenzie, and Josh Downs in that area.

Zavier Scott

Training camp roster battles for an undrafted free agent is an uphill battle. And Zavier Scott out of Maine has impressed so far into camp. But with the team likely only to keep 4 RBs on their 53-man roster, a back of Drake’s prestige makes Scott’s goal of making the Colts roster even more difficult.

Scott's positional flexibility by being a collegiate WR as well as RB should help his case. But what that final RB spot could come down to is special teams. Which is another element that Scott excelled at in college while also being the consensus best player on Maine's roster.

Deon Jackson

Of the Colts battling for the RB 4 job, Deon Jackson seemed to hold the highest odds of landing the spot. Jackson is entering his 3rd year with the team after joining as an undrafted free agent. Jackson’s calling card with the team has been his special team’s ability, but he also has shown solid production in the passing game when his number has been called.

Depending on how long Moss' injury keeps him sidelined, the signing of Drake couple certainly impacts Jackson's ability to make the team's roster. As Taylor Moss and Hull's jobs seemed relatively safe entering camp. This only allows one roster spot if those three are healthy enough to be on the Colt's initial 53-man roster.
