The overriding emotion during the protracted contract negotiations between the 49ers and Nick Bosa has been calm.

San Francisco could be forgiven for getting a little uneasy with Bosa still without a contract extension on the day the Niners had their first padded practice.

But general manager John Lynch is anything but nervous about the situation.

To the contrary, speaking at a press conference on Monday, Lynch was practically bullish about the prospect of getting a deal done .

Said Lynch:

"We have to strike the right mix of urgency. I don't like this. I don't like not having one of our best players here. But I also understand it, and understand we're going to have to exhibit some patience, and understand that ultimately this whole thing will work out. I’m confident in that."

The 49ers have negotiated a string of lucrative extensions in recent years, with George Kittle, Fred Warner and Deebo Samuel all tied down to long-term contracts.

However, Bosa's is likely the most complex the 49ers have had to negotiate during Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan's time with the team. Bosa is likely to become the highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL, but may desire to surpass Aaron Donald and become the highest-paid defender in league history. Donald has an average annual salary of $31.6 million.

Such aspirations would be understandable. Bosa has established himself as the best player in the NFL at arguably the premium defensive position and is coming off a Defensive Player of the Year campaign that saw him rack up 18.5 sacks.

Bosa is known for staying in excellent shape in the offseason, but that reputation will not prevent concern about a lack of practice time from growing the longer this impasse goes on.

Yet there appears little doubt in Lynch's mind the 49ers will have him signed in plenty of time ahead of the season opener against the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

He added:

"I remain confident that we'll come to an agreement, get things taking care of so we have one of our best players, one of the best teammates. We miss him and look forward to the day he’s coming back."

That eagerness for Bosa's return is a feeling everyone connected with the 49ers will share. The deal will be costly, but there will be a collective sigh of relief once it is done.
