The pads are on for the Cincinnati Bengals. Football is looking more and more real as the season gets closer, and that unfortunately leads to the terrible side of the game.

Running back Trayveon Williams went down Tuesday afternoon with what appeared to be an right ankle injury. After getting his ankle taped up, Williams was carted off the field.

Williams, a fifth-year player this season, entered training camp as the favorite to win the third down running back gig. The role was previously held by Samaje Perine, who signed a two-year deal with the Denver Broncos this offseason.

A sixth-round draft pick in 2019, Williams hasn't played a ton of offensive snaps during his first four years in Cincinnati, but he re-signed this offseason on a one-year deal to see if he could fill bigger shoes. He has amassed 49 carries and 238 yards in his young career thus far.

The severity of Williams' injury is obviously unknown, but for a player competing for a valuable role in the offense, any amount of missed time is dangerous. Rookie Chase Brown and third-year player Chris Evans will now have increased opportunities to seize the spot for themselves.

Cincinnati's first preseason game is just 10 days away.
