From training camp bouts to an exhibition under the lights, the Cincinnati Bengals are getting set to kick off their preseason against the Green Bay Packers this evening.

DJ Reader may've called two-time Pro Bowl guard Elgton Jenkins "Just A Guy" after Wednesday's heated joint practice, but several players who actually fit that description will be taking the field tonight with so much to prove.

Joe Burrow, however, will be watching safely from the sidelines. If you're not the Bengals' franchise quarterback and don't have a front-row seat to the first Bengals game in nearly eight months, you came to the right place to prepare.

Will Bengals starters play any snaps?

Head coach Zac Taylor told reporters Wednesday afternoon that the vast majority of starters will not dress for tonight's game, and for good reason. Burrow is just two weeks removed from straining his right calf and isn't expected to play any of the preseason. Just like last year, when Burrow didn't play in August, his starting teammates didn't just so the 1s unit didn't get out of sync by playing with the 2s.

If any starters on offense play snaps tonight, expect them to be off the field expeditiously. That also goes for the defense, a unit that's already built with plenty of continuity as is. There's little need for either side of the ball to risk one of their important player's health.

3 Bengals players to watch

  • RB Chase Brown: One if several rookies to receive ample snaps tonight, Brown specifically will have a great chance to show off his skills in a live game setting. He's taken reps with the 1s and 2s during practice, and will get plenty of snaps to prove he belongs next to Joe Mixon on the depth chart when the season comes around. The shifty tailback will not be limited to just running or catching the ball; expect carries and targets during the game.
  • WR Andrei Iosivas: Targets are also inbound for this rookie as well. Iosivas has been one of the clear winners of training camp thus far; hauling in contested grab after contested grab, and proving his track speed is translating to the NFL game. How well has his craft developed in terms of generating separation and in-game timing? The preseason is the first place to truly find out.
  • DT Zach Carter: All reports from camp say Carter has looked the part entering year two, and the reports are on to something. Carter looks to have bulked up properly to last as a rotational 3-technique defensive tackle. How about the mental side of the game? Can he put together successful pass rushing moves against offensive lineman he should beat at this point? Carter needs a convincing preseason to prove he's ready to take the next step.
