The Philadelphia Eagles have lost several key defensive players this offseason, including safety CJ Gardner-Johnson.

Gardner-Johnson signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions this week after spending the 2022 season with the Eagles.

Philadelphia acquired Gardner-Johnson just ahead of the 2022 season in a deal with the New Orleans Saints that involved swapping several late-round picks.

Gardner-Johnson played well in Philly last season, but apparently not well enough to earn a multi-year deal in free agency.

On Monday, Gardner-Johnson met with reporters and he threw a little bit of shade at his old team.

Gardner-Johnson suggested that Detroit has more talent than Philadelphia.

“To be honest with you, it’s a little better, but that’s just on me,” said Gardner-Johnson when asked if the talent is better in Detroit. “Everybody can look from the outside looking in, but that’s just on me, from the outside looking in, but this team has talent. This team, we can win the division, possibly win the division. Everybody should feel that way, but when I look at a team coming from where I came from, and the teams I’ve played on that won multiple divisions, been to playoff games, and been to the Super Bowl, this team has what it takes to get there, win the division and get to the playoffs.”

There's no doubt that the Lions are a team on the rise — they nearly made the playoffs last season when no one expected them to be a factor.

But to suggest that Detroit's talent is better than the team that just won the NFC? I think that's a bit of a stretch from Gardner-Johnson.

The Eagles and the Lions aren't scheduled to play during the 2023 regular season, but perhaps they'll meet in the playoffs and this can be settled on the field.
