The Dallas Cowboys have been active in player acquisition in recent days. From re-signing the likes of Leighton Vander Esch and Donovan Wilson to trading for Brandin Cooks and Stephon Gilmore, the Cowboys are making moves.

And they are making moves that needed to be done, too. Now, it appears that Dallas will enter the 2023 NFL Draft without a major need on the roster. That will open the door for a ton of possibilities when the team makes their selections.

In the meantime, Dallas has made another deal with one of their own free agents. This time, the Cowboys have agreed to terms with running back Rico Dowdle for depth in the backfield.

Dowdle signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft. He has played in 20 games with the Cowboys since then, but he has been limited with injuries.

He missed the 2021 season with a hip fracture and then suffered a knee injury last year. When healthy, Dowdle has shown to be a quality back in a reserve role and has contributed special teams in a meaningful way.

The decision to bring Dowdle back means there will be some heated competition at backup running back. Tony Pollard is set to lead the backfield, but the Cowboys have options behind him.

In addition to Dowdle, running back Malik Davis took advantage of his opportunities last season as a rookie and shows some real promise. Furthermore, there seems to be a real chance that Dallas drafts a running back relatively early, too.

Ezekiel Elliott is out of the door, but that won't stop the Dallas Cowboys from having some quality depth in the backfield. Rico Dowdle will have his chance to earn that RB2 role and be an important to the rushing game next year.
