Pro Football Focus hands the San Francisco 49ers a surprisingly low free agency grade
Despite making moves for key additions, Pro Football Focus doesn’t think this free agency period has been an overwhelming success for the 49ers.
Though there is still the NFL Draft and countless months left of the NFL offseason, Pro Football Focus curated a list and grades for NFL teams following the initial rounds of free agency.
In that list, the San Francisco 49ers came in with a surprisingly low grade from PFF.
The folks at PFF gave the 49ers a "B+" grade, despite general manager John Lynch bringing in Javon Hargrave and finally moving on from former starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Hargrave was a move Lynch felt like he had to make because he saw what he believed was a slippage in the defensive line production. However, despite bringing in one of the premier free agents, the 49ers lost out on some of their own top producers from the 2022 NFL season.
PFF accounted for these critical losses with a WAR calculation, that estimated the 49ers lost out on 1.624 wins worth of production, which is more than they have acquired, and it is the fourth-worst in the conference — only ahead of the Buccaneers, Eagles, and Rams.
The B+ grade can somewhat be justified. San Francisco lost nine players that were starters at various positions in 2022. Here is the full list: Mike McGlinchey, Emmanuel Moseley, Garoppolo, Jimmie Ward, Samson Ebukam, Charles Omenihu, Azeez Al-Shaair, Dan Brunskill, and Hassan Ridgeway.
That is a large amount of production that seemingly walked out the door. But that doesn't mean the 49ers don't possess enough talent to make another run at winning a Super Bowl in 2023.
With the draft still ahead of San Francisco, it can be expected that the franchise recoups some of its lost assets through the NFL's annual selection tradition. Young players coupled with established stars are the recipe for success in the NFL. And it is exactly what the 49ers are attempting to accomplish, making PFF's grade come across surprisingly low compared to other teams.
Take a look at the full PFF write-up:
"Of all the teams we would’ve expected to make the biggest signing of the offseason — along the defensive line of all places — the 49ers would not have appeared near the top of that list. However, San Francisco now boasts a unit that rivals The Avengers, with Arik Armstead and Nick Bosa still dominant forces when healthy, as well. San Francisco did lose Samsom Ebukam and Charles Omenihu in free agency, so they made sure to not get weaker at a spot that has always been their strength.Hargrave has earned back-to-back 90.0-plus pass-rush grades and put up the first double-digit sack season of his career in 2022, so it’s not surprising the 30-year-old cashed in at such a high level. With pending extensions for young interior defenders like Quinnen Williams, Jeffery Simmons, Dexter Lawrence and others, this deal will also move down the board of largest contracts at the position in short order."
