The Philadelphia Eagles added to its roster on Friday, signing safety Terrell Edmunds to a one-year deal. Philadelphia's move was reported by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Friday.
For Edmunds, he gets to remain in Pennsylvania. He was a first-round selection in 1018. Then, he spent the first five seasons of his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers before hitting free agency this offseason.
Signing Edmunds bolsters the secondary for the Eagles. Chauncey Gardner-Johnson inked with the Detroit Lions earlier in free agency. In his place, the Eagles have added a player that started 75 games for the Steelers.
Edmunds made more than 400 tackles during his time with the Steelers. Additionally, he recorded five sacks and five interceptions. He is a physical player that is active in run support and spends a ton of time in the box.
Furthermore, the newest Eagles safety also adds some value on special teams. That, along with his experience playing a meaningful role in Pittsburgh, makes this a smart move by Howie Roseman. Edmunds should only help a secondary that also features Darius Slay, James Bradyberry, and Reed Blankenship.
Now, this signing likely doesn't prevent the Eagles from acquiring another safety in the draft. Alabama's Brian Branch has been a popular prospect for the Eagles leading up to the draft if Philadelphia opts to attack the position with one of their two first-round selections.
At the very least, Terrell Edmunds brings some important experience and sound-tackling to a defensive backfield that could use it. He's only 26 years old, too, so there is still some upside that the Eagles can get out of the former Steelers defender.
Add in the low-cost and short-term commitment, the Eagles made a good, under-the-radar move that should help the defensive side of the ball.
