PFF has Raiders signing Jimmy Garoppolo in 2023 free agency
The Las Vegas Raiders have a quarterback issue heading into the 2023 offseason, but someone has them making a decision most haven’t thought about
The Las Vegas Raiders have a clear issue they need to address this offseason, which just so happens to involve the most important position in all of sports – the quarterback.
As things currently stand, the Raiders have a ton of cap space, the third most actually at $46 million per Spotrac.com, so they can spend money on a quarterback. Because unless they feel comfortable with Jarrett Stidham starting 17 games for them, they will have to find another option.
Most people have thrown out the idea of the draft, with four of the top quarterbacks projected to go top 10. At seven, the Raiders could possibly snag one of them.
But no, Pro Football Focus has other ideas. They think the Raiders will sign Jimmy Garoppolo in the 2023 free agency.
It was already a near certainty that Garoppolo would be playing elsewhere in 2023, but with head coach Kyle Shanahan saying in his end-of-season press conference — after third-string quarterback Brock Purdy suffered a potentially lengthy elbow injury — that there was no scenario in which Garoppolo returns, that door seems officially closed.
The Las Vegas Raiders decided to move on from Derek Carr and will likely consider taking a big swing at the quarterback position this offseason, perhaps looking to reunite wide receiver Davante Adams with his former quarterback in Aaron Rodgers once he’s back from his four days of voluntary solitary confinement. However, if the Raiders can’t get a deal done for a veteran, they will presumably look to make a splash in the 2023 NFL Draft with the No. 7 overall pick.
Signing Garoppolo would likely be a move they do short term, as the next draft is even better when it comes to top-heavy quarterbacks, at least most think so. Garoppolo is a fine quarterback who can get the job done. He has made it to the Super Bowl.
However, there is one issue with that. Garoppolo didn't win it because he choked. His defense carried him for the majority of the year. He isn't a guy that with a bad defense can go out and single handily win you games.
He also isn't the guy Davante Adams signed up to play with, so there is that factor as well. Either way, it will be interesting to see what the Raiders do this offseason, but I did not even once think this idea was one that could actually happen. Apparently, PFF does.
