It has been five years since the Philadelphia Eagles had questions surrounding the running back position.

With Pro Bowl running back Miles Sanders hitting free agency with Boston Scott, the running back room is looking barren. Howie Roseman has shown apprehension about paying running backs top-billing. So, to replenish the running back room, the Eagles may turn to the draft. Specifically, the front office may look at selecting Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs in the early rounds.

And at the NFL combine, reports indicated that the Eagles' link to Gibbs has grown deeper. The two sides formally met with each other at the combine on Saturday.

Gibbs has been selected by the Eagles in recent NFL mock drafts. And what he may offer Philadelphia is versatility and a duel-threat ability that would fit in seamlessly in Philadelphia's offense.

Gibbs led Alabam with 926 yards on 151 rushing attempts for 6.1 yards per carry as well as seven touchdowns. But he didn't just do damage on the ground. He also could be a threat in the passing game, drawing comparisons to Alvin Kamara. In his last season at Alabam, Gibbs collected 44 receptions for 444 yards and three touchdowns.

Selecting a running back in the first few rounds would grant the Eagles enough wiggle room to fortify the roster at other positions. Instead of spending on a veteran back, the Eagles could enjoy high-level play on a rookie-scale contract, which is the secret to keeping a great team consistent.

Paying a running back like Sanders at a premium on a second contract makes no sense. Selecting Gibbs and allowing him to be exactly what he was at Alabama allows the Eagles to fill a need without breaking the bank.
