Eagles reportedly expected to move on from Pro-Bowler this offseason
The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to move on from a 2022 Pro-Bowler this offseason
The Philadelphia Eagles enter the offseason as one of the top teams in the NFC.
Philly came up short in Super Bowl LVII against the Kansas City Chiefs. But with Jalen Hurts, AJ Brown, and DeVonta Smith returning in 2023, the expectation is that the Eagles will once again be one of the favorites to take home the Lombardi Trophy.
Not all of the Eagles' key players from 2022, however, will return in 2023.
NBC Sports Edge's Matthew Berry reported this week that Philadelphia is expected to "part ways" with Pro Bowl running back Miles Sanders.
The former Penn State standout will be a free agent when the new league year begins next week.
"Another running back departure, as two sources told me they expect the Eagles to part ways with Miles Sanders," noted Berry.
According to Berry, Nick Sirianni's preference is not a "running back by committee" approach. The reason the Eagles went with that approach (though Sanders received the bulk of the carries in 2022), is because they didn't trust Sanders to handle a heavy workload due to health reasons and his ball security issues.
Sanders set a career-high in rushing attempts in 2022 with 259 (his previous career high was 179 as a rookie in 2019).
It seems clear that Philly would prefer more of a bell-cow running back to feature in their offense. I'd expect the Eagles to draft that running back (maybe Texas running back Bijan Robinson?).
Sanders should be able to land a decent contract (for a running back) in free agency coming off a career year. That career year, in fact, might be part of the reason the Eagles aren't planning on bringing Sanders back. He'll command a much more lucrative contract now than he would have a year ago.
