NFL reporter explains why the Saints chose Derek Carr to be their next quarterback
The Saints signed QB Derek Carr for a specific reason, and it’s something they’ve done for quite a while.
It was a good day for the New Orleans Saints on Monday.
Their pursuit of quarterback Derek Carr came to an end as they signed the veteran free agent to a four-year deal. However, on Tuesday morning, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network went into detail about the logic behind the Saints bringing Carr on board.
"The Saints refuse to rebuild. They feel this is the route to go," said Wolfe. "The Saints have not drafted a first-round quarterback since 1971 Archie Manning longest streak in the league and they want to continue to continue to continue to go the veteran route.
"And Derek Carr was always the team that made the most sense for the Saints. He was doing his shopping around looking at the Jets, looking at the Panthers, but the Saints were waiting for him to come home and he did."
The Saints certainly were.
It was reported that Carr was leaning toward the Jets. Well, it's obvious now that whatever they did to entice him didn't work, but the Saints still have to make this work financially.
New Orleans is substantially over the salary cap at the moment. However, Wolfe explained how the Saints keep finding ways to get these types of things done.
"Their VP of football administrations Khai Harley is, he's a wizard. Every year they're $50 million over the salary cap," said Wolfe. "They find a way to get under and make a big addition and Carr is that big addition this year.
"Their move essentially tells you they look at this NFC South and say it's wide open for us to take for the next two years. You heard Ian (Rapoport) say two years, $70 million essentially saying we can take this division and they're probably right."
Tom Brady's retirement forces the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to look for a new starting quarterback. Also, the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers have to find their guy as well, so the Saints snagging Carr gives them a distinct advantage in the NFC South at the most important position in the sport at the moment.
It's all about Carr and the pieces around him finding a way to gel properly and get the Saints back to the playoffs for the first time since 2020. However, Wolfe had one more nugget to drop when it came to the Saints' new signal caller.
"The question I have is how far can Derek Carr take them?," said Wolfe.
With Carr's 0-2 record for his career in the playoffs, that's a valid question to ask.
