National media outlet says Eagles should sign key defender from NFC North team
One source suggests the Eagles look to the NFC North in free agency
It seems inevitable that the Eagles will lose some valuable players in free agency this season.
With just under $4 million in cap space, the Eagles have Javon Hargrave, Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, and more headed to free agency.
While teams are getting more and more creative with restructuring, it still seems impossible that the Eagles will be able to retain all of these players.
With much of the Eagles' defensive line headed for free agency, ESPN suggested that the team pursue defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson of the Vikings.
From ESPN: The defending NFC champions will need a few players on defense depending on what happens with their own free agents. One of the areas of need: defensive tackle, and in particular, a run-stopping defensive tackle. Starters Fletcher Cox and Hargrave are free agents. Veterans Linval Joseph and Ndamukong Suh, signed at midseason to help fix the run defense, were on one-year deals. Tomlinson is a 325-pound nose tackle who can also play 1-technique and will clog up running lanes next to 2022 first-round pick Jordan Davis. He can get to the passer a little bit too, with 15 hurries last season.
The Vikings are in an even worse financial situation than the Eagles are, with -$15,780,607 in cap space. Thus, Tomlinson could bolt after another strong season on the defensive interior.
Tomlinson certainly wouldn't make up for losing Graham, Cox, AND Hargrave. However, the Eagles retaining even one of those players, plus adding Tomlinson, would be more than sufficient.
Tomlinson is not going to break the sack record anytime soon, but he is consistently one of the best run-stuffers in the league. The massive defender did get after the passer more in 2022 however, finishing with 15 QB hurries.
In 2022, the Eagles were just average against the run, finishing 16th in opponent rushing yards per game. Adding Tomlinson next to Jordan Davis would give the Eagles an elite run-stuffing interior.
Tomlinson also will not be cheap, but he is expected to be significantly cheaper than Hargrave or Cox. According to Spotrac, Hargrave's expected annual value is around $20 million. Meanwhile, the site has Tomlinson at around $8.5 million annually. That number is much more realistic for the cap-strapped Eagles.
