Saints: Future Hall of Famer endorses the signing of Derek Carr
One of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks is on board with Derek Carr being in New Orleans.
After carefully weighing his options, Derek Carr chose to play for the New Orleans Saints after nine years with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders.
Of course, as is true when any notable player changes teams, there were plenty of opinions about Carr joining the Saints, even wide receiver Michael Thomas chimed in. However, on Thursday, the most important player that's ever worn a Saints uniform gave his thoughts.
Drew Brees played in New Orleans for 15 seasons (2006-2020) and set several league records which included setting the NFL record for passing yards before it was broken by Tom Brady. The future Hall of Famer spoke about the addition of Carr to his old team while on the Dan Patrick Show.
"I think it's a great fit for him, a great fit for the Saints," Brees said. "I've always been impressed with Derek Carr."
There's a specific reason why Brees feels that way.
"In many cases, you're going to the line of scrimmage with multiple plays and the ability to check in and out of those plays," said Brees. "Jon Gruden's offense, which is what he came up in, was the same offense we run – that west coast style.
"We're not going to run a bad play. That was always the philosophy. We're going to get out of bad plays and into good plays. You've got to be a smart quarterback to do that. You have to recognize what's happening on the other side. I always felt like he did a good job of that. So, I think he's a good fit."
Gruden was Carr's coach for four seasons with the Raiders. Now, Carr will work with Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael who coached Brees for 12 seasons in New Orleans.
So, as Brees mentioned, it's a great situation for both sides.
If Thomas remains on the roster and more importantly can stay healthy, Carr won't be short of weapons to get the ball to.
Wide receiver Chris Olave thrived as a rookie racking up 1,042 yards on 72 receptions last season. Sprinkle in receiver Rashid Shaheed and running back Alvin Kamara, Carr will have quite the weaponry to hopefully get the Saints back to the postseason after a two-year absence.
Carr has the backing up Brees, which is great to have. Now, Carr just has to produce once the pads come on.
