Broncos unlikely to re-sign Dre'Mont Jones after NFC DT signs massive deal
A recent NFL development could spell disaster for the Broncos’ chances.
Things aren't looking good for the Denver Broncos to bring back Dre'Mont Jones.
The talented defensive lineman should have his fair share of suitors and even discussed where he might like to end up in a recent interview.
And it wasn't with the Broncos.
Things already seemed dire enough, but now, the chances of re-signing Jones seem slim to none. Especially with the latest NFL development.
That's because NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that the Washington Commanders gave star defensive tackle Daron Payne a four-year deal worth $90 million.
The Broncos decided against using the franchise tag on Jones, which means a new contract is the only way Jones sticks around. There's plenty of interest in Jones, as well, which means he'll be in position to command top-dollar on the open market.
… But watch out for guys such as Denver's Dre'Mont Jones, Jacksonville's Arden Key and Arizona's Zach Allen, who have been mentioned several times to me as players expected to draw strong interest on the open market. – ESPN's Dan Graziano
Denver simply may not be able to afford Jones, at the end of the day.
Jones was a pillar of an already impressive defensive unit. Jones, last season, enjoyed a year that had him producing 24 solo tackles, 6.5 sacks, and one forced fumble.
He's already one of the NFL's better defensive linemen. His versatility and motor are what keys his success and the best part is he's only 26. He's just now entering his prime.
Denver's defense was one of the lone bright spots last season. While the team is returning a lot of key players, losing Jones would be one of the more painful departures.
Here's hoping Payton has something up his sleeve and can make a competitive run at this year's offseason.
