49ers co-chairman John York opens up regarding the secret to winning Super Bowls
Apparently, to one San Francisco 49ers executive, offense wins games, but defense wins Super Bowls.
Winning Super Bowls is the standard for the San Francisco 49ers.
And recently, 49ers former co-owner and current co-chairman John York peeled back the curtain on how the Niners plan on getting to and winning, the biggest game of the NFL season.
“If you look back when we won Super Bowls with Bill as the head coach, it was always with one of the top five defenses,” York said to NBC Sports. “We didn’t win when the defense wasn’t good. The offense is a heck of a lot better when the defense stops someone close to their own goal line and that field is a lot shorter.”
If defense wins championships, what does York predict regarding the 2023 NFL season for Niners? Sacks.
“Lots of sacks,” York said regarding what the 2023 season holds. “Good defense, stop the run, get to the passer. Obviously, Kyle [Shanahan] is in the bucket of offensive genius."
He added: "We didn’t win when the defense wasn’t good. The offense is a heck of a lot better when the defense stops someone close to their own goal line and that field is a lot shorter.”
On the offensive end, the 49ers are dealing with a bit of quarterback uncertainty. Brock Purdy is returning from a UCL injury that required surgery. Trey Lance still hasn't proven himself as a quality NFL starter. And Sam Darnold, though talented, hasn't had enough consistency to put together a solid stretch in her career.
Then on defense, Javon Hargrave was the team's major free agent acquisition. Nick Bosa is going to be the usual player he always has been. And so the Niners are predicting sacks, and more sacks when it comes to the on-field production.
