The Tennessee Titans drafted one of the most polarizing prospects in the entire class when they traded up to select Will Levis with the 33rd overall pick. Now in a quarterback room with Ryan Tannehill and malik Willis, many believe it’s the rookie out of Kentucky who will usher in a new era in Tennessee.
Whenever a team drafts a quarterback one of the first questions asked is centered around how soon he will be thrust into action. With Tannehill occupying the starting spot, it wouldn't be surprising if Levis never even takes a snap this fall.
However, Tannehill is coming off injury after taking a beating behind one of the most grotesque offensive line combinations the NFL has ever seen at the tail end last season. The Titans could also find themselves prematurely eliminated from postseason contention if issues that have plagued the team in recent years are to re-emerge.
Sports Illustrated’s Connor Orr recently released an article outlining 100 bold predictions for the upcoming season. Included in his extensive list was his belief that Levis will see legitimate action in 2023.
From SI: Will Levis will appear in three games for the Titans, who’ll finish with a winning record
"Do I think the Titans will win the AFC South? No. Do I think Ryan Tannehill is completely and totally washed? Not necessarily. Do I think Will Levis will eventually be the answer? Yes. I think Levis will get eased into action, though the Titans don’t need him to take live bullets right away."
Quarterbacks forced into play during their rookie seasons have an ugly track record from a historical perspective. Titans fans can relate after witnessing Willis in three starts last season.
While starting Levis as a rookie would likely mean something went terribly wrong for the Titans, it would come with its own benefits. Tannehill is likely heading elsewhere following the season as his contract expires, so putting Levis under center in the regular season would make for a smoother transition into year two.
The Titans are counting on Levis to continue an impressive stretch of football in the Mike Vrabel era. If he can prove capable of leading an NFL offense at any point in his rookie campaign, the Titans’ future will be in good hands.
