Giants Daniel Jones quarterback rankings Chris Simms Unbuttoned 2023 NFL OTA News

The New York Giants are all in on Daniel Jones, evident by his offseason extension that nets him north of $150 million dollars.

But despite how reserved a personality Jones is, his play on the field generates a polarizing conversation.

Well former NFL QB Chris Simms sorted through the nuance, giving reason for optimism among big blue nation:

On his most recent episode of Chris Simms Unbuttoned, Simms continued on with his offseason top 40 quarterback countdown, covering players pegged at spots 13-9. Daniel Jones finished at 11 in his ranking, with Simms adding the following context:

"The name of this tier is "What's Your Ceiling." So I ask you, Daniel Jones is at 11 but what's his ceiling?" Asked co-host of Chris Simms Unbuttoned Ahmed Fareed:

"I think that Daniel Jones ceiling… I think realistically, seventh or eighth best QB in the league," answered Chris Simms. "I would say around there, you know like he has some physical ability to where maybe he could be better than that. But I think it's the other things we talked about that hold him back. It's a little bit of the, you know, the sidearm throws, or I ran over here, now my feet are cockeyed and I gotta throw halfway across the field over there. It's that stuff that I got to see to go okay, now he can go to the superstar tier."

Many in the media and even inside the Giants fanbase probably believe that 11 is too rich of a ranking for Daniel Jones, even if that's the exact spot where he sits in average value per year or APY

I happen to be in the minority when it comes to Jones, standing firm on the notion that if he reaches his full potential he can be a top 10 Qb in the league.

Jones is a subtle but unquestioned leader, with a high football IQ and propensity to fix crippling mistakes like his early career fumble issues.

Pair that with tangible skills of a rocket arm, sturdy frame, and elite athleticism for the quarterback position, and you see how a player that just turned 26 is only starting his ascent as the infrastructure around him continues to develop.

"Can he ever be Josh Allen?" Asked Fareed:

"No. I don't I don't think so as of right now," answered Simms. "I don't know, Josh Allen had a lot of those things (playmaking ability) in place already. It just needs to be refined a little bit and reined in a little bit where it's like Daniel Jones is the opposite. Like hey, we got to push you to do this, we need to do this, hey, you can't do this right. So we'll see where it goes. But I think with Daniel Jones, it's all on the up and up."

And that's the bottom line. Jones doesn't have the crazy playmaking that drops your jaw, makes you jump out of your seat, or raises the floor of a pedestrian offense. But based on what we've outlined, and the growth potential heading into year two of Brian Daboll's system, things are certainly looking up for the signal caller.
