The Denver Broncos organization wants no excuses for Russell Wilson next season.
Sean Payton and George Paton are bringing in offensive players what feels like every day. This is the part of the offseason where seemingly no-name players can quickly rise to household names with a successful workout.
While there are plenty of long shots on the roster, another player was given a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream of competing in the NFL. Former Cowboys WR Brandon Smith was officially invited to camp.
Smith joins an already crowded WR room. In fact, if Smith were to have a successful camp and get a contract, he would become the 14th receiver on the current roster.
Smith was previously an undrafted free agent in 2021 before being picked up by the Dallas Cowboys. Smith went on to spend the next few seasons parked on their practice squad with limited playing time available to him. However, despite limited playing time, Smith was able to do the most with his limited reps in exhibition games and even found himself with an exceptional highlight-reel play.
In the 2022 season, Smith wound up joining the XFL's DC Defenders where he finished with eight catches for 118 yards and a touchdown in six games.
Smith's acquisition could lead to another reciever being cut. While he has his work cut out for him to be able to compete when the season officially kicks off, the organization is familiar with defying the odds.
In fact, Denver is one of the best places across the entire league in finding hidden gems. Fans remember the incredible story of Phillip Lindsay going undrafted and eventually making the roster. What fans may not realize is that Lindsey was the 14th UDFA to make the roster in 15 years.
Smith, while a long shot, should like his chances.
