The New York Giants received an A+ grade from PFF when analyzing their 2023 NFL Draft class.

Yet, they somehow only rose one spot in PFF's post-draft rankings and are still miles behind the Cowboys and Eagles in their positioning.

Let's dive into where the Giants fit in, and how it stacks up compared to their roster additions and peers.

Sandwiched between the Vikings (14) and Jaguars (12), the Giants came in at 13th in PFF's post-draft rankings, up one spot from their pre-draft ranking at 14. Here's what the staff had to say about their 2023 draft and outlook:

The Giants struggled a bit on defense last year, ranking 20th in EPA per dropback allowed, partly because they lacked enough adequate cornerbacks to run Wink Martindale’s blitz-heavy scheme. Banks should be able to step into the building as a Day 1 starter opposite Adoree' Jackson and give the Giants a formidable cornerback duo.

If I remember correctly, the Cowboys won the same amount of playoff games the Giants did last season, escaping wildcard weekend with a victory before losing in the divisional round to the 49ers, just as the Giants did to the Eagles.

So while the Eagles came in at second, and are objectively a better team in terms of production, roster construction, and outlook, I'm not sure that the same thing can, or should be said about the Cowboys. Dallas came in at seventh, beating out teams like:

  • Jacksonville (12th)
  • Miami (11th)
  • Baltimore (10th)
  • Los Angeles Chargers (8th)

I can make a sound argument that all of those teams are better top to bottom and the Chargers, Ravens, and Jaguars all have better quarterbacks than the Cowboys in my opinion.

Personally, I believe that if the Giants take the step they should in the passing game, given their acquisition of pass catchers like Darren Waller and Jalin Hyatt, and become more fundamentally sound in the secondary with additions like Bobby McCain and Deonte Banks, their ceiling is higher than the Cowboys.

But for now, it's only May, and the dog days of the offseason are looming. New York can continue to soak up the bulletin board material, however, just stacking chips to shoulders that are already weighed down.
