The Cincinnati Bengals will have NFL scoreboards sounding like slot machines in 2023 thanks to their high-powered offense. Their most explosive weapon, Ja'Marr Chase, will be one of the main catalysts for that.
Chase missed four games with a hip injury last season but still put up over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns after his spectacular rookie campaign of 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns. High-level production to say the least.
The former first-round pick wants to take it to a completely different level as he expressed when speaking on his goals for the upcoming season.
"Cincinnati stuff. Stuff to have my name written around this whole facility. Every receiver record they have," Chase said, via the team's website.
Chase has already set the single-season record for receiving yards. However, he'll have to ball out on the highest level to snag a few more.
Carl Pickens set the Bengals' record for receiving touchdowns with 17 in 1995. T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who played alongside the Bengals' all-time leading receiver Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson for eight seasons, established the team's highest mark for receptions in a year in 2007 with 112.
That's a lot of catches and touchdowns for one season, and some players don't achieve that many in a career. However, if anyone can it's Chase with his speed, route-running savvy, a field vision.
If Chase does have his best year yet and is fortunate to set new team records in 2023, it won't be easy.
"It's hard getting catches in a game," said Chase. "Especially if you're doubled and there's another star receiver on your team. You almost have to catch every pass that comes your way."
In the case of Chase, he plays with multiple productive receivers in Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd. Nonetheless, he keeps showing he's one of the NFL's elite receivers, and at least one of the Bengals' receiving records he doesn't have yet is in trouble of being broken this year.
