The Tennessee Vols could be on the verge of landing a 2024 four-star recruit with elite speed.
247Sports director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong previewed Tennessee's upcoming recruiting weekend and he suggested that four-star running back Peyton Lewis could be the next player to commit to the Vols.
(Vols fans who were around in the 90s will probably appreciate the names "Peyton" and "Lewis"….Peyton Manning and Jamal Lewis are a couple of Tennessee legends from that era.)
Lewis, 6-foot/190 lbs from Salem, VA, is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 11 running back in the nation and the No. 3 player in the state of Virginia.
The Virginia native also runs track in high school and he just won the 55-meter state title for the second time.
Lewis isn't just fast, by the way. According to 247Sports national recruiting Brian Dohn, Lewis is "difficult to arm tackle and does not go down on first contact often". Dohn also notes that Lewis is a "patient runner who is comfortable running between the tackles but has [the] speed to bounce plays outside".
From 247Sports: The 247Sports Crystal Ball is trending towards Tennessee for one of the program’s most coveted running backs Peyton Lewis. The Salem (Va.) High standout is one of the fastest players in the country at the position and used his elite speed to churn out 1,560 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns as a junior. South Carolina is the main competition but we like where the Vols stand coming into Lewis’s return to Knoxville.
South Carolina appears to be Tennessee's top competition for Lewis. And oddly enough, Gamecocks running backs coach Montario Hardesty, a former Vols standout under Phillip Fulmer and Lane Kiffin, is the South Carolina coach that's the primary recruiter for Lewis.
Lewis is expected to announce his commitment in late May.
Wiltfong placed a 247Sports "crystal ball" prediction last week for Tennessee to land a commitment from Lewis. Recruiting battles are always fluid, but it'll be a bit of a surprise if UT isn't the program that secures a commitment from Lewis.
