Five former Tennessee Vols were selected in the 2023 NFL Draft.
All five were selected in the first three rounds of the draft.
And one of those selections was ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller's favorite overall pick in the draft.
Miller was asked about his favorite overall selection in the draft on Tuesday. And he went with the Detroit Lions' selection of former Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker.
From ESPN: Hendon Hooker, QB, Detroit Lions (No. 68). The Lions have a real opening for a quarterback of the future behind Jared Goff, and Hooker will have time to heal from his torn ACL and learn behind Goff before any expectations are placed on him. The Tennessee QB came at good value in Round 3.
Hooker was viewed by many analysts as a first-round talent — some even thought he could go No. 11 to the Tennessee Titans — so the fact that Detroit was able to land the former Vol in the third round certainly qualifies as a "steal".
And not only is it a steal, but Hooker landed in a situation where he won't be rushed into action — which will allow his torn ACL to fully heal.
Nothing is certain when it comes to quarterbacks and the draft. But it definitely feels like the Lions got one over on the rest of the NFL by landing Hooker in the third round.
