The Minnesota Vikings are in a precarious position when it comes to one of its top defenders.
Vikings EDGE Za’Darius Smith had a productive year in his lone season with the team in 2022. Smith led Minnesota with 15 tackles for loss and finished second on the team with 10 sacks.
But just one year removed from signing a three-year deal worth $42 million with the Vikings, Smith requested to be released earlier this offseason. Minnesota isn’t exactly eager to grant his wish, especially after such an impressive season.
Smith bid a farewell to Skol Nation and the team in a tweet just before the free agency period began.
It’s clear the two sides remain at odds as demonstrated by Smith’s absence from voluntary workouts which began this week. While it’s not out of the ordinary for a player of Smith’s caliber to skip these programs early in the offseason, it certainly doesn’t help smooth things over either.
Minnesota would save $12.1 million in the team’s 2023 salary cap by releasing Smith, but they would also carry the burden of dead cap charges. By cutting the three-time Pro Bowler, the Vikings would be forced to eat $3.3 million in 2023 and $1.6 million in 2024. Though the savings are sizable, it’s not worth being so vulnerable at a key position such as pass rusher.
General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has had plenty of challenges as he enters his second season on the job. Mending the team’s relationship with Smith looks like it might be his tallest task yet.
