The Denver Broncos front office has been busy over the past few weeks. From player signings to draft night trades and selections, to schedule releases, they have had their work cut out for them.
Now, the front office had to make yet another impactful decision to fall in line with the NFL rules and regulations for this portion of the offseason.
As the rookie minicamp has begun, the team needed to make a few cuts to maintain the 90-man offseason roster. We are nearing the part of the offseason where fan favorites may get cut and surprise players rise to prominence in hopes to compete on the 53-man roster.
Denver was forced to part ways with four players, some of whom saw action with the team last season. Specifically, Mike Klis reported that the Broncos released OLB Jake Martin, RB Tyreik McAllister, OL Parker Ferguson, and OT Casey Tucker.
Martin was one of the more surprising decisions. The veteran pass rusher saw playing time last season totaling six tackles and one sack in five games. Martin will be able to find a new home in the NFL and the Broncos will save $3.8M with the move.
Tucker had spent time with the Broncos practice squad in 2021. While there was some momentum in his game, a toe injury sidelined him for the entirety of the 2022 season and now Tucker is free to sign elsewhere.
Ferguson spent a small amount of time on the practice squad and McAllister was part of the UDFA class last year. Both are young talented players who will have ample time to try out for potentially another rookie minicamp.
This isn't the first, and won't be the last, roster decision the front office needs to make. Martin seemed to be a cap casualty in an otherwise desiring pass-rushing room. An interesting decision from the first-year head coach.
With each passing day, we are getting closer to meaningful football. Now that the schedule has been released and camp is starting, all eyes will be on Denver. If there's another lackluster season for the Broncos, we could see even more sweeping changes outside of a veteran pass rusher leaving.
